I have a games table 2 by 2 with a thick heavy finish on top that has developed spider cracks through out the top.I suspect the finish is shallac, not sure what is the cause of the cracking and how do I refinish this so it does not happen again any ideas

Try rubbing alcohol in a discrete place. If it is shellac, it will dissolve the finish. If it is shellac, you are in luck, as it will be easy to strip with alcohol.
