I can't find any info on this, but has anyone ever stained particle board? I want to maintain the funky look of it and feel a darker, semi-transparent stain might make it look richer. (It's on the floor of a art gallery) What is the general consensus as to whether this will look interesting and "finished"?

Stained particle board looks exactly like stained particle board. You might try sealing it once with a sanding sealer or maybe even twice as this will let it absorb stain more evenly.
I have made paticle board look like stone by applying an epoxy based plaster on it and than burnishing it but even this will not stand up to traffic.
PB usaully has a denser outer layer and once people have worn through it by walking on it it will wear very quickly. Maybe a few coats of poly would slow it down.
