View Full Version : Carving "Scrolling" Patterns

For years I have designed patterns for scrolling and recently was asked how I would suggest incorporating scrolling patterns into relief carving. Of course I experimented in my shop with various patterns.
I didn't quite work out the total carving experience, but will continue to play with this idea. I have completed, "Ranache" Ram, an original Chrestensen Burghout Designs fretwork pattern and played around with a little power carving.
Comments and suggestions welcome. :D
Take care

Hi Toni, The pic dosen't do the work of art any justice. By the looks of it you have carved some of the base so far.
A suggestion to me from severaly carvers in the past was to make sure that your MAIN focus stands out.
IE; A bird on a piece of wood. If the wood is a beautiful piece of driftwood...it takes away from the main focal point. That's the only piece of information I can pass on to you based on what I see in the pic.
By the way...did I mention that it's a beautiful work of art? Nice job Toni.
Cheers, Robbie.

Is this an advertisement or something? No responses including from the one who posted?.........

Robbie, It's not an ad. Toni has posted on this forum several times. She is a very talented artist and scrollsaw pattern designer who likes to share her work, ideas and advice with fellow woodworkers. Check out her website for a glimpse of the beautiful work that she and her partner produce.

Sorry Robbie
I was away and then had some computer technical difficulties (think it was me not the computer.... :( ). Sometimes I would just love to sit and talk about scrolling, and with the heat here in Orillia today, it would be one of them.
Thank you for your reply, and kind words on Ranache. Your advice on the focus is a good one. Right now I am going through all sorts of mask patterns, and would love to see some carved, so if I get the chance to personally try this again - I'll keep it in mind.

Hi Toni;
and with the heat here in Orillia today, it would be one of them.
I wish you could send some of that heat back to the Rocky Mountains here. We have had the coldest spring and most rain I have ever seen here in the last 10 years. Forcast is for sun and warmer next week so fingers are crossed.
I used to live in Ontario in another life and still make a trip to relatives there about once a year.
You do beautifull work. It would be nice to see your pictures posted somewhat larger for people like me that have ancient eyes. :)

Thanks for your reply William. :D And for the kind words regarding some of my work. I do like to have some fun in the shop, somedays it is really hard to get back to "mom on duty".
I have passed on the job of the website and the whole digital image thing off on my daughter, so I get them the size she makes them. Larger photos would be nice, I agree, but larger photos also present their own problems.
Maybe someday we will manage to get a catalogue together and I'll be sure to stress the importance of the larger photos. Thanks for the feedback.
Take care
Toni
