Hello,
My father in law has been looking at getting into some scroll work, probably intarsia.

He has a basic scroll saw and that's about it. I would like to get him going in this hobby (because he seems to want to get into it) by getting him some more items for christmas.

What is essential for him to complete a project?
1. Plans - where do I get some
2. Wood - various shades and grains - I know where to get
3. Sanding- what to get (he is a woodworker and has standard stuff - disc sander, sand paper)

Anything else???

This is also new to me.

Thanks for the help!

Thanks for the links! Sure look interesting!

Is there a basic "starter kit" (ie. essential items) that a scroller would need

It sounds like he has the basic tools. Start small then work up.

Try this link, they have kits that include everything you need-wood, pattern, tracing paper, instructions. I used them when I started in Intarsia and found them to be great. Good luck! www.sawbird.com.

Bob,
Thanks for the tip with Lacasse. Never thought of them. I have been getting a little frustrated with them, as they seem to only stock rough pine and red oak and when I call asking for something else, its, "don't have it, thanks, have a great day" and then pretty much hang up.

Bob,
Are you in the Sudbury area?

Shawn,
Thanks for the link!

Jason, Hi.
I'm in Elliot lake and since I moved here 6 years ago, have been getting the majority of my exotic woods from LaCasse. i.e. Paduak, Ebony, Pau Amorela, Bloodwood and of course,Western Red Cedar just to name a few.
Did you try their website that I posted?

http://www.thewoodbox.com/exoticwood...ddsandends.htm

It details all they carry.

Their patterns are designed by Karen (Co-owner) and everyone there have always been helpfull.

Bob,
I have been to their site on numerous occasions and a couple of years ago I purchased some rough cherry from them. I know they have exotics in small sizes (ie. 8" x 24" type of stuff), but I would like to be able to purchase rough quartersawn white oak, cherry, maple, walnut, etc, but they only carry rough red oak and pine in the longer lenghts and the exotics in small lengths.

I find it funny, that being surrounded by forrests up here (I know mostly softwoods), it is more difficult for me to find rough lumber than when I used to live in Toronto!

Thanks again!

Hi Jason,

Have you tried L&F for wood.

Brent,
That is one store that I love to visit when I am in Montreal!
I find though, that with the shipping, it's not very cheap to get wood sent to Northern Ontario! I do visit my sister who lives in Oakville about twice a year, so that's where I go (Century Mill, A&M) for lumber. Just wish I could get that kind of stuff up here :(

Thanks again for the idea!

Bob, I wasn't aware that you were the moderator of this forum.

Bob, I guess you got us going off topic (I did think it was appropriate talking about getting into intarsia and having a difficulty finding wood to complete projects with, and thanks for the link to Lacasse, a supplier of INTARSIA products!) but maybe I can get it back on topic:

So where would one find wood in the Sudbury area in order to complete INTARSIA projects. Hope this is more on topic!

Forgive me if I am just a little confused but:
The original post was a request for assistance with Intarsia.
Every contribution I subsequently made dealt with Intarsia.
The subject then, appeared to me to go off on another tack, unrelated to Intarsia and when I asked if Intarsia was not supposed to be the subject, it was suggested that I caused a derailing of the subject from Intarsia to…..what?
And to ice the cake, I am accused of attempting to hijack the forum by appointing myself as moderator.
This last bit from someone who has not otherwise provided any other contribution to this subject of Intarsia under discussion.
In any case, I hope someone out there can make sense of the whole topic by reading the previous posts and then point out to me the error of my ways.

Hi Bob,

I don't see any error to your ways. The discussion on wood came from looking for places to find exotics for intarsia.

Bob,
Sorry, but I was requesting help regarding getting started with intarsia (plans, equipment, WOOD, wisdom, experience....) and then you gave me a very usefull link to Lacasse, then I commented on my frustration with them (ok, so that was not directly related to intarsia). After that, Brent gave a usefull link to Langevin, then all of a sudden you posted a reply:

Bob HJason I thought Intarsia was the subject?

So that's where I came back saying that you had gotten us off topic in the first place(which to my knowledge, we were not off topic, right?)

Anyways, I don't mean to drag this out and I don't want to start something here either.

Bob, I do want to thank you for pointing out Lacasse to me, as I had never thought of them for intarsia plans (because of my bad experience) and I hope that we can continue to share together on this wonderful forum!

But... If anyone has any other leads for suppliers of hardwood (other than oak) in Northern Ontario (preferably Sudbury), let me know!

Thanks
