While waiting for my cabinet saw to arrive I tought that I would build a mobile base for it.
My idea is to use 2X4 and , using lap joints, build a base the size of the saw footprint. I would then put sturdy casters under. 2 free-rolling and 2 that lock. My concrete floor is level and smooth. The saw will not be moved around a lot but rather rotated 90 degrees to accomodate some cuts.
What do you think, would it be enough, or do you have a better idea?

Made one for my father-in-laws contractors saw using 2x4 just recently. Runners going front to back are 2x4 on edge. Cross pieces are 2x4 on flat, dadoed or rabetted to accept the runners, fastened with lag bolts. The 3" casters are mounted to the underside of the cross pieces, swivel at the front, fixed at the rear. The cross piece overhangs at the front creating a wing to which a jacking bolt with knob was attached to take the weight off the front casters and anchor the saw. The legs fit inside the box created by the runners and the cross pieces, supported by strips of oak glued and screwed to the walls of the 2x4 runners. Angle iron would work better if you had it, but oak suffices.
The base raised the saw a little more than an inch. I have a shop fox on my saw, and if I had had my time back, would have saved the bucks and made my own. This design is very sturdy.
Oh, I glued all the joints. And the 2x4's were jointed and planed square to about 1 1/4 x 3.
Hope this helps.

Hey Randy, do you have a picture of this base that I could see? Thanks, Kevin.

Real, when I first made one for my saw I used two wheels that swiveled and two that didn't. This was not a good idea. Eventually I got two more pivoting wheels and it is a lot more versatile in moving the saw around.

good for 500 lb. They're priced fairly reasonable. it's on their new products list in the website. I got one with my 350, and I'm using it on my 480 8" jointer. It's a good design with two 3" fixed wheels and two step-lever swivels. I couldn't build one for that price.

Nope, but I have a PDF file of the plan somewheres. I'm off to New Brunswick this morning, but I'll try to remember to lk it up when I get back.
Cheers

Mike's right. I bought one of these($49.00)after I bought the 3 wheeled Samona(delta knock off)mobile base. The General Int. base was more stable and rolled smoother so I bought 2 more for bandsaw and jointer.I did use half of the Samona after I got some 1 1/2"sq tubing from Princess Auto, visited a local welder and now have a base under my Delta Platinum contractor saw for about$110.00 rather than the $290.00 that Delta wants for their setup

Buy a package of nylon floor guides for furniture, about $10 for a 4 pack of the large size at Wal-Mart. My cement floor is painted and its even easy to move my 700 lb planer.
