View Full Version : reversing a motor
Hi folks,
how do you make a motor rotate the other way? Is it just changing the black and white wires? thanks.

You have to rewind the motor for single phase.

Usely reversing a motor (electric) need more than reversing the black and white, if the motor can be reverse you can see the instruction somewhere around where the wire plug IN the motor, sometime the instruction are outside, sometime the instruction are inside the cover, usely it is easy to change, I din`t not see to many small motor with that option, if your motor are 1hp and up your chance are better.
If you are stuck you can always try some shop where they repair those motor and exchange your motor with a minimum fee

Hi Vlad
I have an old Shopsmith MkVII machine which has a reversible motor/switch. The switch has an OFF in the middle and forward and reverse at each end. My understanding is that the switch mechanism allows the motor to reverse. My knowledge of electicity is pretty basic, but about 3 years ago the switch burnt out and I posted a question on this forum. In that thread, some of the forum members who were electicians & electrical engineers provided some expanation of the process and the switch mechanism. Apparently there are reversing switches out there. Unfortunately I did not save any of those responses and nver replaced the switch (long story there).
Does anyone remember that thread or can you jump in on this question?
Cheers

If you can't figure it out, give me a call.
Id be glad to come over and do it for you.
Worst case , I would have to rewire the start cicuit in the motor.
Best case. would be a wireing diagram showing the reverce wiring.

If you are trying to reverse a small motor, like 1/3 hp washing machine motor you have to find the start winding wires and reverse them.

Hi Vlad
Bryan is the most correct. In a single phase motor you have a start winding and a run winding. You need an Ohm meter to determine which is which. The start winding has a higher resistance than the run winding. Before you check for the windings check and number each wire. When you determine which pair of wires is the start winding reverse the connections.

as you're checking and number the wires make a wiring diagram. With any luck there's a wiring diagram on the cover of the pecker head(trade name for motor junction box).
Thanks JP.
email me and I"ll send you my phone number. Or do you know it already?
Thanks to all.
