I finally remembered where I saw the information on gluing UHMW polyethylene. Problem is that I am not sure if this stuff sticks to wood... :)

This is an Adobe Acrobat document about an adhesive used to glue UHMW to some materials, but wood is not mentioned.

This is a chart for gluing hard to glue materials. UHMW is not specifically mentioned, but HDPE and LDPE are on the list. UHMW is a high molecular weight HDPE, so the same adhesive should work.

I just read about Titebond's new hot melt polyurethane glue. This looks quite promising for difficult to bond surfaces.
There is and advert for it in this siiue of WOOD magasine.
