Hello,

I have been on a bit of a bottle stopper binge lately...here are a few of my recent ones. There are two maple stoppers that have been dyed red and one tulip wood stopper. The hardware is from Lee Valley, these are fun to turn!

Thanks Jim for the idea. I use these all the time but never thought of turning some. Yours are almost art work. Very nice !

Classy. Question. Which finish did you use? Sure looks good.

Thanks Fred,

I finished them the same as I finish my pens,I used a Mylands friction polish, three applications then a brown Hut stick, burnished then a white Hut stick also burnished. The red dye is an alcohol dye....wear gloves, DAMHIKT..

Beautiful work Jim, as usual. Is that the red dye you bought when we went down to Rockler/Woodcraft? Looks like it does a nice job. Bill

Nice work Jim.
The middle one looks like you turned the bottom a bit after applying the dye. Nice touch.
I like the colour of the tulip wood. I might just have to get me some of that. Fist I have to put a dent in the pile of wood in the driveway. http://www.canadianwoodworking.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

You haven't by any chance been opening and emptying all the bottles too, have you? That would be as much fun as making the stoppers. I find I have very little use for these. Being from Newfoundland, we believe that the contents will 'spoil' if recapped.

Beautiful work as usual, Jim.

Cheers
Randy
Killing time at London Heathrow on my way back home from Rotterdam. What time is it anyway? Jet lagged to pieces here.

Thanks JP,

Yes you are right, I applied the dye after sanding then came back and made a light cut to see the fresh maple under it, I like the look as well and will be doing more of that in my designs as I make more stoppers.

Take care,
Jim

Hi Randy,

I remember well one summer when I was working as a geologist in the NWT, we had another geologist from the ROCK in our crew who when he opend up a 40 pounder (once a month) would tossed the cap in the fire and that bottle was not done till it was laying dry in the bottom of our glasses sitting around the camp telling stories...ah the stories....and not a stopper to be found....my 20's are well gone but ah, those memories.

Take care,
Jim
