I'm looking for a few really good woodturning links that I can use to supplement any books I can get on the subject from the public library. This is an area that I have not done anything in for years - grade eight I think? and thinking back I believe the school had limited gouges and I never saw anyone sharpen anything - no wonder we only got to made a peanut bowl!
The good news is I have a lath and some basic turning tools. The bad news is I don't know how to use them! and I need help learning.
Does any one have any links to suggest on the basics - the how to? appreciate your help on this one

Hi Gord,

Try to get your hands on any books by Richard Raffan, if possibe. Richard also has multiple videos.

Others that come to mind are, Mike Darlow, Ernie Conover.

Also , chck out the turning forum, at WoodCentral

I'm sure J.P., Jim Shaver, Mike Brazeau or ... will chime in and tell you to check out the Golden Horseshoe Woodturners Guild. The contact information is under the Woodworking Club link on this forum. Hands on instruction is the best.

Good luck and welcome to the addiction, http://www.canadianwoodworking.com/forum/images/smilies/wink.gif

Gord, try the Golden Horseshoe Woodturners Guild. They meet in Burlington (Guelph line/QEW area) every month and offer seminars and courses. When seeing their stuff, you can just watch your addiction grow..........
Cheers.

Many call turning a Vortex, or Welcome you to the Vortex.....After doing cabinetry for over 20 years and picking up a lathe just for the fun of it, it's a blast, I find it hard to get back to the woodworking at times!

Oneway has about the best and easiest sharpening system going, they also have a DVD available at no charge and they are not that far from you.

I would encourage you to contact someone in the local woodturning club, two hours with someone who knows what they are doing make a big difference.

Go to your local library for Video's, Raffin's and Stubb's are great ones to start with.

If you can find some fruitwoods to practise on (cherry, apple, pear etc) they are very, very easy to turn.

Have Fun!

The books by Richard Raffan (Turning Wood) and Mike Darlow (Fundamentals of Woodturning)are excellent books to have in your library. There are some good videos available on the internet. The one I found most useful is a DVD from Taunton Press "Turning Wood" by Richard Raffan (it follows the book fairley closely - the book had been revised but the DVD hasn't). The best price I found on the web was from http://www.duluthtrading.com/.

I watched a program on PBS " American Woodworker" and they had a presentation by Rudy
Osolnik, well worth the watch if it happens to be on again. (Rudy made it look so easy)

However, hands on tutoring can't be beat.

Good Turning

Hi Gord.
It just so happens , if you want to join the GHWG, Im the guy to see. We have an excellent library with both books and videos free to members. If you join now, you get a bit of a discount cuz its late in the year.We meet twice a month in Burlington so its not far to go(just off Guelph line). If your interested, email me at the link above. Our next meeting is this thursday 7:00. If you want to drop in as a guest it's ok. This weeks subject is coring.Just come see me at the door and Ill get you signed in.

LV in Burlington has some seminars coming up. There is one for beginners in Oct.The instructer is...umm... whats that guys name again?...Oh ya...Me.
I joined the GHWG a couple of years ago and I leaned more in the first year than all the years of trying on my own.

All the books and videos mentioned are good ones.
