View Full Version : DC gates

I'm fed up of my 10' long DC flexible 4" hose constantly falling off the shut off gate at the Y attached to the DC. I'm always moving the hose from machine to machine or using it to vacumn areas so a lot of yanking and pulling occurs where the hose connects to the plastic shutoff gate. I use a hose clamp thingy that sort of looks like 2 wires with a nut and screw used to tighten it but no mater how hard I tighten the thing it still manages to fall off. Wish there was a lip that the hose could slide over.
I'm wondering if a metal gate would be better.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance for any and all replies.

Hi Brian,

Mega-Tube in Laval, carries metal blast-gates. You may want to look at those, next time you're in the area. They're one block away(east) from J.R. Normand. They're not right on Dagenais Blvd, but on the last cross-street to the right, before Normand. You can't miss it. Huge white lettering on the building. About 100 feet from the corner.

If you prefer to make your own, Bill Pentz has a plan by Phil Bambalough, with pics. Here it is.

I put a short screw throught the plastic gate, made sure the wire thats in the plastic of the hose goes under the head of the screws (one on each side. I made sure they were short (about 1/2"). Had concerns that they would cause a point where blockage could occur but nothing ahs happened so far!!

Thanks for the suggestion but even Petz's gates are smooth all around so I think the hose will still get pulled off.
Hmmm..maybe screw the hose right onto the gate.

I had the same problem with my DC gates. The fix was easy.... I took the hose off and put a few wraps of duct tape around the surface of the blast gate and slipped the hose back on over the tape. The clamp can now tighten it down and make a nice tight connection.

Perhaps the problem is the surface being to smooth, sanding it with a 60 or 80 grit sandpaper to remove the gloss and make the surface coarser might help.

Cement in a short piece of ABS or PVC pipe to the gate and clamp the hose to that.

LOL, Hi Jim,

I don't think you'd recognize golf UFO, in Laval. Those guys have golf boutiques in the West Island, and south-shore of Montreal, indoor practice range, and major up-grades to the Laval course. It's no longer that lil' par 3, 9-hole course. Been quite a while since I played there, in the mid 70's.

Dagenais, now extends over the autoroute(15), and into the ever-expanding Laval Industrial park. The changes there, have been staggering over the last few years.

I lived one block off Dagenais, in Fabreville, back in '76, then bought my first house, just across the auto-route, in Ste.Rose (Champfleury). My sister, moved from there, quite close to you I guess, right near the Oakville/Burlington line, close to the lake. (Burloak Dr.?)

I'm not sure about the Dairy Queen. I think I remember where it was, and it's probably still there, but if you haven't seen that area in a while, you probably wouldn't recognize it. I tried to include the golf ufo web-site link, but for some reason, that's unavailable.

Take care Jim, and I hope you're enjoying that beauuuutiful bench you made.;-))

All the best, Bob

Make your own gates and use a pc. of pipe to clamp to. This gate uses 1 coupling cut in half and some shop scraps.
Cheers Wally!!

Bri. i tried those clamps(2 wires and a screw) and found them almost useless(for me). I just got a couple regular 4" hose clamps at HH and have had no problems since. Hope this helps.

Lots of good ideas here to choose from except for metal gates. The hose will probably slip off metal too and metal gates leak a lot. plastic gates break too. make your own if you can for the best solutions. I like drews idea of gluing on another piece of pipe and it can make your own lip. I would do that on my own blast gates. If you still have problems then stop pulling the hose.

A couple of wraps with duct tape will cure the problem

I had the same problem with my clamps. They seem more suited for a 5" set-up. I cut pieces off an old 1.5" strap and wrapped them around the hose under the clamp and they seem to hold well.

That is Funny Bob,
I grew up in Ste Rose, just north of Champfleury ( I remember when we used to snow shoe in that part of the bush before they built houses).

Try Laval Blvd and Plateau Ouimet, my mother has lived there since the mid 50's, I grew up there and one of my favorite places was the bush and being by the river...many many memories my friend... but you can never go back.

Take care,
Jim

I was born and brought up in Pointe Claire but passed through Laval many times on the way to Lachute and the Laurentians. My Uncle passed away in Lachute last week and I was there for the funeral on Saturday - you would not recognize Laval, what was once mostly field as far as the eye could see is now mostly houses! Even the North shore is heavily populated all the way out to St Eustache. I now live very close to Burloak in Burlington, it's a small world,

Hi Doug,

Sorry to hear about your uncle.

Funny thing, growing up I always wanted to live in the West Island, moving here in the early 80's I moved to Oakville, 1/5 of my neighbours were from Montreal (West Islanders), see you moved west too...

Take care,
Jim

The west island is a nice place...in fact the whole island is a nice place...not sure which area I like better...Montreal Island or Quebec City...probably QC...especially in the winter...
