I know the tannic acid in Oak causes discolouration hence the use of brass screws for hardware or visible areas but does it matter for structural pieces?
Specificaly I'm referring to screwing an oak top down from underneath through come cauls etc.
Is the same reaction that causes the discolouration likely to cause normal wood screws to disintegrate completely or will it be OK? If not are brass screws strong enough? What about stainless screws?
TIA.
