A contractor is wiring my shop for 240V and on the 4.5hp bandsaw circuit he underestimated the length and now intends to splice in the missing 15 ft length.
The entire run from panel to outlet is about 40 feet and we are using 10ga copper. The high startup current surge as well as an 18 amp nominal draw under load has me wondering if a splice will impede the ability of the wire to handle the current.
Should I be concerned about this or is the splice acceptable from a safety and operating point of view? I don't want my new laguna damaged over a few bucks worth of wire but I need to be able to say with certainty why.

While I don't think you have anything to worry about as far as your saw or safety are concerned. It won't be done properly. I would insist that it be done over without any splice. Once it is finished is much more difficult to do it right. That splice will bug you forever. The time to fix it is now.

As long as the splice is done in a proper box and is accessible, their is nothing wrong with doing it.
