I srayed Flecto varathane from the can on a table top with good results. Never tried a vertical surface, and I imagine runs could be a problem. I read you can thin with naptha but that sounds very hazardous to me.

I spray on water based poly with professional results. It dries quickly, and you can put a couple coats on in one day.

After inquiring on this forum about spraying lacquer and finding out about the hazards I decided to spray a polyurethane. I used a water based urethane (can't think of the name offhand)on some ash interior doors with very positive results. If you spray light coats you won't have to worry about runs. By the way I don't have an expensive HVLP sprayer just a $50.00 cup sprayer.
Hope this helps.
