Could someone please tell me if Watco Danish Oil is toxic once it has dried. I have made several scroll sawed puzzles that are intended for very younge children. Can I finish them with Danish Oil? Will they be safe for children to put in their mouths? I have used a cutting board type oil in the past but am all out of it.

Mike it should tell you on the label. The ingredients wont change once it is dried. I saw in the new LV catalogue at the back a non toxic danish oil.

No wood finish sold in Canada or the U.S. is toxic once it is fully cured. However, Watco oil is pretty slow curing. I'd say give it at least a month before dining on the wood. Most oil finishes, watco included, are made up of various petroleum and vegetable oils, with varnish added to give a slightly built-up finish.

All finishes sold in US (and I believe Canada) have been required by law to be non-toxic when cured. This has been so since the early 70's

When in doubt, use shellac. This is what keeps M&M's from melting in your hand.

I cannot believe that finishes when cured are all non toxic. We are talking about a finish on a kids toy. Kids chew on toys. Thats like saying it is okay to chop meat on a lacquered butcher block in a restaurant.

Finishes are all non toxic when cured because they stop gasing off and or you dont eat off of it.

I for one would not put any finish that is toxic in its liquid state on a childs toy.

They use lacquer thinner to keep cigarettes lit but you wouldnt give a child a smoke.

Personally I wouldnt out a finish on it, unless you are painting it to which they sell lots of non toxic paints at Toys r us. I would sand it to the point of being polished.

The new LV Catalogue sells non toxic oil and I thinkl I read that it is a Danish oil and they also sell a non toxic tongue oil.
