Thanks to all that help me through the finishing of this project, first time working with raw lumber, really quite pleased with it all considering there were some new corners to work around to get to the end. Table is wormy western maple from a mill near maple ridge, bc called Carlwood. Picked up some windsor chairs, they came in yesterday just in time for christmas, again, tks to you all and have a safe and merry christmas with family and friends, cheers, greg in ladner

How did you finish the top?

I'm guessing you rubbed out that top with some finishing abrasives. Looks great. Please let us know how it stands up to wear; I'm about to do the same thing with a desk.

thanks guys for compliments. finishing was a new area for me and I treaded cautiously. Finishing: Put a coat of 50/50 shellac down, lightly sanded, med walnut grain filler, old master Special Walnut stain also to warm things up (what a nice stain that is). Let it sit for a day, did about 6 or 7 coats of wipe-on poly (gloss) with light 320-400 sanding between), finished with 2 wipe-on poly semi gloss. That was it. Did have some issues with getting swirl marks, but changed cloth to a soft cotton rather than the wiping pads I had, was much better. Has sat for 4 days now. Not sure on the abrasives now, did look into rottenstone, but not sure how that would work, would be interested in any suggestions as to what that would do. Have a nice Christmas dinner guys. Hey Greg.

I'm going to take a run at a table project similar to this. It will likely be built from butt-joint laminated VG Fir, with some sort of hardwood band around the perimeter; perhaps Western Maple like yours. Mine will be a bit longer; about 120". Any advice about jointing and glue-up?

Owen legs and rails detach, top is all one piece.

legs and rail come apart, top is all one heavy piece, 96x41. I did move the tope around solo during finishing, but was tricky, it is a heavy piece even for two.

Tried lots of different ones, but all were not very comfortable. Research online and found them locally in vancouver area, called Knock on Wood. They handle all sorts of custom made furniture and they several different windsors. Not cheap, but much less than what they were wanting on line. Chairs are one of those things you really have to sit in, so on line was not really practical. They will stain them various colors of your choice. And they are really comfortable with the high backs.

I love that table, did you design it yourself or off of plans?
I live about 15 minutes from Carlwood and never heard of them. Do they sell to the public and how are the prices?

Just some fast gluing, had help with lining things up, no friskets on main. Let it set up for a day, took a good blade in a skill saw and put a guide down to trim the ends (make sure your skill saw is 90*), drilled large forester bit holes in main piece and the cross members, chisel out channel between them and used friskets in the joints too. They call them 'countertop connectors' got some Richelieu hardware here in vancouver area, had some from lee valley, but they broke, not strong enough. (see photo). Again, let set up for full day. then took belt sander and went cross grain to take down the highs, really ground down the bottom, same to top, more careful and slowly fine-tuned the paper grit, then switched to hand sanding, took a while. A Note: Cross member between legs is lag bolted, then end pieces are attached with kreg screws on bottom and with one long heavy screw in middle of it, then one plug to cover it. These are removable if dismantling is needed. I designed table from some photos I saw in magazine, drafted up full scale in adobe illustrator program (mac) then new how much material to purcharse and pretty much stayed with layout.
