first Lathe - Craftsman 12in Lathe - wondering about Chuck

Have just started working with my first lathe - the CT Mastercraft (sorry meant the say that in the title) 12in Lathe. Wondering if anybody knows if there is a chuck that will fit this model.

As far as I know that lathe has a 1" x 8tpi spindle so pretty much any chuck will fit it. Some direct threaded and some with spindle thread adaptors.

bob's right, its a 1 by 8 tpi

all kinds of places will have a chuck, busy bee, leevalley, turning suppliers

most chucks use adaptors to fit the chuck to almost any lathe

get a good one, it'll last virtually forever. cheapies are an excercise in frustration

HUH? You say Craftsman and CT Mastercraft - are they the same manuf? Anyway, I have an older Craftsman 12" Model 133.xx and it is 3/4" x 16, #1 M.T. Just got done buying chuck for it. How about verifying your Craftsman Model #?

P.S. My point was that some "Sears 12" lathes are 1" and some are 3/4" depending on age and manufacturer.

just to make sure you get the right adaptor for a chuck, just take a faceplate with you when you buy

or measure the diameter of the spindle at the threads with calipers. 3/4, 7/8 and 1 inch are easy to differentiate

tpi or threads per inch is also easy, with a ruler, count the threads over a half inch and double it.

Just be sure not to match the threads for the outboard faceplate by accident. My first lathe was a CTC Mastercraft tube lathe (12X37). The thread size was 3/4X8TPI. I bought a Busy Bee chuck and, when I upgraded to a CT128 after a couple of years, I just bought a 1X8TPI insert for my existing chuck and switched it over to the new lathe.

I used a oneway talon on my 12" mastercraft lathe and it worked great. And when I outgrew the mastercraft lathe, the chuck came with me with the simple replacement of the thread adapter on the back of the chuck. Given that a chuck might cost the same as you'll be able to re-sell that lathe for if/when you outgrow it, the oneway chucks are in my opinion the way to go.
