Hanging Cabinet Doors to Spray Finish

I will be spray finishing my 38 cabinet doors soon and I'm looking for a local source for buying something to hang the doors. I found this called Euro Hinge Cup Finishing Clip from http://www.eagleamerica.com/product/...s_and_hardware

Any tips or tricks on how to effectively spraying 38 cabinet doors on both sides would be appreciated.

I just use coat hanger wire bent in a sort of J shape to hook into the 35mm holes and a larger loop to hang over the bar. For 38 doors, it shouldn't take more than 15 minutes to make the hangers with a pair of side cutters. Cost of metal coat hangers - not much. Any fairly heavy guage wire will work. FWIW

Dan -- I like to spray mine laying flat. Since I use NC Lacquer it dries very quickly and I can turn over in less than 30 mins. I set up 2 tables of 4x8 and lay the doors out on them. It would probably take 2 sessions to spray your doors this way. First I lay them face down and spray the backs of them. This allows a little leeway in setting the spray and volume. Then turn and do the faces. Wait 1/2 hr. and set off to the side standing on bottom edges on scrap ply. Then do your second set the same way. After spraying your second set then you can start sanding the first set with 320 silicone carbide paper. This makes everything nice and smooth and then you repeat the whole process again without the sanding. I could do them all in one day without any problems but don't rush it if you don' have to. Also laying flat gives you a little more forgiveness if you load them too much.

I sort of do the same as Wally, but only spray one door at a time, backs first on a scrap board with a lazy susan bearing on it, then pick it up and move to an area to dry. Painters points work well for suspending the door. Tip, use the scotchbrite type pads or steel wool for rubbing down the corners, sandpaper cuts through the finish too easily.

I spray mine laying flat and have one of these racks. The catalogue shows $600 plus but I bought mine from Hafele for $279. One of the best investments i made. The hangers work great on a chain that moves the door into a drying oven and you take it from the chain at the other end. Last month i sprayed 6 large shutters and hung them. Tied up my shop for a day as they took up so much room. With a rack you spray one side and by the time you get 38 doors sprayed on one side you are ready to do the other side. I always have my last side to be sprayed the outside of the door.

Hi Dan,

I spray my doors on a turn table one side at a time and place them on a rack to dry.

The turn table uses a bar stool seat swivel http://www.leevalley.com/US/hardware...,44013&p=40585

The "drying rack" is a couple of 1x3's and lengths of dowels.

With a turn table you are always spraying towards the point of exhaust and the drying rack should be behind the turn table in the intake air flow to keep them clean of overspray.

Thanks to all who have replied. I will spray flat and leaning towards building a simple dry rack like Don has posted. BTW I will be using Target WB shellac & WB laquer. I know that these finishes take longer to dry but its my only option. I did however read good reviews about these WB products.

I bought one about 4 months ago. Great piece of kit, easy to wheel around and also very useful for taking parts from machine to machine or sorting lumber. 38 doors on wall mounted racks will take up a lot of wall space.

No problem, just do them in batches. When the first batch is dry move them out of the booth and continue on....

At that point you can lean them against anything with a little gap between each door. If they are dry to the touch they won't stick together at the top where they touch.

All of the WB finishes I've tried don't take that much longer than lacquer to dry.

I put a cup hook into the bottom of the door (predrilled on the edge )

and then use a coat hanger section
(cut the top off 2" up on the angle ,bend over for the ends )

and use this to hang the door in the booth , and the hanger stays with the door through
the whole process of spraying and finishing .

This allows me to spray all six side of the door at the same time ,

then I can move the door around
via the coat hanger and hang from the garage door rails or beams in the ceiling or resting up against something .


Spraying 5 sides of a door takes more than twice as long as spraying all
six at the same time . I;m done the whole door before you have even switched sides.

Allow me to clarify something here for all - not to disagree with anything said. These "water-based" lacquers are not really water based. They are water reducible (thinned) but are based in a member of the alcohol (inherently water soluable) family (I am no chemist).

Thus the key to their drying is dependent on air circulation to evaporate the alcohol-type and water moisture. Thus a gentle air breeze circulation will amaze you in how fast they dry even in high humidity (lethal to conventional nitro cell. lacquer; it fogs) and lower temperature within reason.

The two vertical fixed racks shown, particularly the rolling steel, are really great - PROVIDING - a) you have spare floor space like a 1,400 sq. ft. shop, b) storage space when not in use, c) less than constant use, and d) cost.

An alternaive is the Erecta-Rack http://www.erecta-rack.com/ which consists of 1/2" steel (thin wall conduit) pieces and supporting plastic brackets, costs min. $100 for starting mnodule, and comes apart to store in a cloth zippered storage bag.
