End Table

In my thread about the TV cabinet makeover, I alluded to having a lot of solid oak material left over.

First thing as to take one of the cabinet sides and cut it down for the table top. I didn't bother drawing up any plans. Everything was dimensioned from the top and what "looked right to me"

Some of the other parts were ripped and glued to make the legs

Other pieces went to make the bottom shelf and the aprons/stretchers

Ripped a few more thin pieces to make the vertical slats, and here is the dry-fitted result

Some sanding, stain/finish and then glue it up.

Stay tuned for some pics of the final product in a couple of days.

Looks good Bill! Slightly resembles the cover project from our Dec/Jan 2012 issue. Did you get any inspiration from it, or is this all from your head?

Thanks Rob. The idea was all from my head. I've built several like it in the past, making it a pretty simple build.

Well Jason, you have quite a range of options.

1. Cut them by hand (ugh, what a thought, but the Hand Tool guys will tell you its a piece of cake)

2. Use your router

3. Get a mortising attachment for your drill press (not recommended....most of them are more trouble than they're worth)

4. Check out Busy Bee, King, Delta, all of whom make mortisers at various price levels. I notice the BB bench top one is currently on sale for $225

The one I use is a "no-name" brand bought from a company called Tool Trend years ago. It was similar in price, but more robust, than the BB model, but was far less expensive than the Delta. I bought a set of BB hollow-mortise chisels (B320SET) that have performed flawlessly for many years.

You could also skip the whole mortise/tenon process and use pocket hole joinery.
