  • Best flooring screws for chipboard

    Hi:
We are replacing our existing carpet on the main floor with vinyl planking and now that the bare floor is exposed I would like to fix a few squeeky areas on the floor....so what are the best flooring screws to use for chipboard?....something that does not need pre-drilling? Thanks,Huck50

#8 or 10 by 1 3/4. Coarse thread. Depot sells them as floor screws.

      x2 above

also, don't go off the "line" of existing nails/screws.
find the joist, mark each end and chalk a new line. even then you may miss depending how straight the joists are.

ran into the squeek issue when we laid hardwood at old house. other than using 1 1/4" drywall screws on the floor, they (builder) also missed with close to half of them. My OCD caused me to remove any they missed but left in place, while replacing/adding my own flooring screws as described by bender above.

Supposedly there are proper type screws to use for chipboard flooring.

I've never used them. Last time I screwed any chipboard down was about fourty years ago using drywall screws.

Buy floor screws its all you need. Find both ends of the joists and snap a new chalk line. If you can pop the nails out from the builder your squeeks will go away. Those screws will work fine. Anything the manufacturers will cost 10X as much.
