Re: what type of wood should be used for a sauna

Need to narrow down the Cedar question as each area folk has his/her on idea of what is Cedar... White cedar, Red Cedar, Aeromatic Red Cedar, etc. Aeromatic Cedar would not make for a good Sauna. But the others might, however the Saunas I have seen are built of Redwood.

A friend built one of rough cut Poplar planks (of course he lives in the mountain area and his property was full of poplars...)

I vote Sandle Wood. But maybe the aroma might be strong.

Check out the FAQ page here:

        http://www.finlandiasauna.com/sauna-faq.html

It doesn't specify which wood except that it needs to be softwood, otherwise it gets to hot to the touch in use.

Cedar -- redwood etc. Nothing else.

Agreed, Western Red Cedar is the best wood to use any time you are going to have heavy exposure to heat & moisture. It will last for decades in a sauna or indoor pool...and it looks really nice too.

I would say cedar is a good choose. The sauna at our camp is made of 1x4 pine. The walls are horizontal 1x4 tongue and groove and the ceiling is is rough 1x4, not sure why they put rough on the ceiling but I think theres a reason for it. The finlander who built our camp before my parents bought it worked at a lumber mill and must have got a real good deal on 1x4 because the whole place is covered in it. The camp exterior walls are board and batton 1x4, as well as the walls in the inside. The floor and subfloor are tongue and groove 1x4 and the roof is even 1x4.
Back to the sauna, the pine knots tend to leak the sap out of the knots, not a big deal but it can get a little sticky on your back

Cedar! Preferably Western Red without many knots but Eastern White with knots is still better than other varities of wood.

Attached are a couple of pictures of my sauna at Pellow's Camp.

There is a company on Bowes Rd in Concord, Ontario that manufactures sauna kits. Can't remember the name of the company but all they use is Western Red cedar

No, those folks are my cousins.

The sauna in the photos is on Pellow's Island in Lake Pivabiska north of Hearst, Ontario.
