  • Mould problem in shed. Need a solution.

I have a small garden shed that has a north-west facing wall that consistently has mould growing on the inside wall. The roof on that side also has moss growing on it. I had to replace the wall just two years ago with new strand board and now there is once again black mould all over the inside side of the wall. I added vents to that wall and the opposite side hoping that added ventilation might slow the problem but it did not. What type of product could I use to prevent this ? Anti-mould paint, some type of composite wall board, PT plywood ?? Suggestions ? I was thinking of using a (don't know the product name) cement-fibre board type product that has faux wood pattern on the outside. I believe Home Depot sells it but it could be pricey.

On the same topic, does anybody know the trade name for the wall sheeting typically seen on sheds and garages ? Its made from thin plywood and it has grooves cut on the outside to simulate vertical tongue and groove boards.

Mold need food and water to live. Cellulose in wood is food. Either get rid of the wood or get rid of the water. Cement fiber board is a good choice. Check with the manufacturer and make sure there is no wood fiber, paper or cellulose based glue in the product.

The plywood you are asking about is "T1-11".

Sorry, can't help you on the mold issue.

      EDIT: Is it this stuff....

Is there a floor in the shed ? 6 mil poly layed down under a floor would help as a moister barrier.
I think the plywood your refuring to is called ranch wall.

You need to identify the source of the moisture and eliminate that.

Thats the crazy part. The shed is dry as a bone inside. Just that one wall is covered in mould. All the other walls and the floor is dry and clean.

The floor is perfect. No moisture or mould.

I agree with Jaywood, Mould does not grow in a Desert- There has to be moisture to have Mould.

A shot in the dark, but maybe you could try contacting a company that specializes in mold removal. Being such a small job, they just possibly give you the insight you need over the phone that you need to deal with on your own. I have found Friday afternoons are good time to call to get someone for this kind of free brain-picking advice.

When you say "Strand board", are you referring to OSB?

Also, is there a tree near that side of the shed?

Can you give us some detail pictures of the shed from the outside and inside both closeup and far away? Maybe we can see something you can't.

Clean it up and paint the wall with a couple layers of Kilz to prevent future outbreaks? Bearing in mind its a shed.

Spray the mold with a bleech solution to kill it.
