  • ring, ring (can't hear my phone)

When I am in the shop using machinery, wearing ear muffs, I can't hear my cell phone in the front pocket of my pants, set to its loudest ring. It does vibrate, but it seems weak and I can't usually feel it. I was expecting a call yesterday, so I took the phone out of my pocket and put it on a table so that I could at least see it flashing if someone called. It got covered in dust - even more than usual, so that's not the best solution. How do you guys know when someone is calling?

I'm not against getting a new phone if that would solve the problem. (I currently have a Nokia 2760)

If you don't think your work is good enough, maybe you need a Magic Square.

And I thought I was the only guy here with dust in his shop. I stick the phone with my watch in a plastic sandwich bag and hang it on a hook.

I worked in a small custom shop that hooked a light similar to what's on top of a police car to the phone, so whenever it rang you thought the cops were pulling up to the back of the shop. It worked pretty well.

I miss the odd call now and then, but I keep my cell in my pocket and have a landline nearby (my studio furniture number) as well. Unless I have my ear protection on and I'm using a louder machine I usually don't miss much.

Chris...use your head. This is not a hard problem to solve:

Then put on your ear muffs.

Will your bluetooth fit under your muffs?

Chris, I believe that device has a stereo headphone jack. Get a cheap set of powered computer speakers and plug them into your headphone jack.

I'd like something similar for my land-line. I checked The Source but they don't sell anything. I guess I'll have to try a CNIB outlet, since I know they have items that light up when a call comes in.

I actually wrap a phone in saran wrap. You can still push the buttons that way easy enough.

Be safe, use voice mail, answer the phone when you are ready to. Or if the call is that important, don't be running any power tools.

I have an LG that came with a set of ear buds, that would easily fit inside the muffs. I admit I just found it a week ago and it took some time to figure out what it fits.

The phone has a smaller-than-standard headphone jack. I suppose I would need an adapter.

I don't think so, Greg - I can barely fit an earbud in there.

I made a little (embarrasing) discovery today. I was working quietly when I heard my phone ring. I barely heard it ring. I thought, if I'm working quietly and can barely hear it, then it's no wonder I can't hear it when using power tools. So I checked the volume, and it turns out the ringer is turned down. Hmmm. I wonder how that happened. I turned it back up.

Sometimes, I don't think to check my phone until the end of the day, so I may not get messages until too late. I suppose I could just check more often, but I'd rather just know about them when I get them.

                          Thanks for all the suggestions.

Another option is to get a cordless phone set that supports bluetooth.

                            http://www.staples.ca/ENG/Catalog/ca...word=bluetooth

When calls come in the cordless phones would ring, and you would just need to have the cell phone near the base station (Maybe safely in a drawer to keep the dust off). This would also let you have a regular landline flashing light type unit for the shop.

I got a pair of earbuds with my phone too, but I think they're just for listening to the radio with the phone. I'll see if I can find them.
