    Most logs of that type are turned to the same diameter, then a rectangular shape is milled out on the bottom for the entire length of the log. This way the two edges of the milled out section sit on the log below. Expandable foam ?? is placed in the groove for sealing purposes. There is also a vertical cut to center line made on the log to reduce cracking.

    Fro my very limited experience logs of minimum ten inch diameter should be used for proper building.
