  • Stanley 244 or 246 mitre box restoration

A small project started last night and finished this morning!

She seems to be first generations. She has no tag or place to put one. On the side, there are no holes to insert the guide for repeated cuts which, I believe, came later on the model. Otherwise, for the rest she had all her pieces except one of the 4 depth guide and the small piece that is put on the top of the saw for automatic release. So if I'm not mistaken, she would be around 100 years old. But maybe experts here can tell me anything else!

She was coming with a 26 "x 5" saw Shurly & Dietrich, PAT Dec. 21-1869 in good condition. The frame of the saw can take 8 1/4 "at 90 degrees and 5 1/2 at 45. What is interesting is that on these old models, the cuts are not indicated in degree, but in number of sides. If you made a 4-sided frame, you put it on 4, at 3-5-6-8-12-24!

I cleaned and polished all the parts, lubricated and redid a new maple sacrifice board. I also had to repair the back
cylinder which was no longer holding the saw in the up position at the back. Now she is almost like new!

So much for my little miter saw!
