  • Lead shot for dead blow hammer

I'm just about finished a couple of the dead blow hammers featured in Wood mag a little while back but I can't find any lead shot. Sporting goods places only seem to have steel shot for reloading since lead is taboo. Anyone have any ideas where to look?

I recall reading somewhere that melting tire weights gives off a very toxic vapour (not sure what), so cutting them up would likely be a safer alternative. FWIW.

Quick google on melting wheel weights:

I'm sure that there is more out there. Lead is dangerous.

Melted lead can be dangerous. If it comes in contact with water it will splatter. This could be a drop of persperation.
An alternative would be to cut solder into small pieces

Are you able to buy a box of shot gun shells?

It is legal to shoot with lead shot. Just cut the shell open.

If you must have lead the sporting goods stores should have split shot , I havent been to a sporting goods store in a good many years as I stocked up on that stuff long ago, but I have split shot that I use to keep my baits down.
It might not me made of lead any more??

                    lead???? weights

                    Thanks for all your suggestions.....

We drill a hole in the bottom of the Kar's and fill it with melted product and then drill out to meet the maximum weight allowed...I do not think the tire weights used today are pure lead.....However we melt them down in a well vented garage...just adults around....Jim

                      lead shot

talk with somebody from the local trap shooting club, they reload and most will have some lead to spare. Small fish weights might work too.

Unless you make your own shot with the melted lead you will not have a dead blow hammer , just a heavy one, I think the idea behind the dead blow is they are not supposed to bounce!

Re: Lead shot for dead blow hammer

Yes, I believe it has to be small lead shot, not chunks; but then again, I've never made or had one before so I can't say for sure what would work and what woudn't. I thought you couldn't hunt with lead shot anymore and that was why the big sporting goods place I went to didn't have any. If I can't find any soon, I might cut some lead solder into little bits and see what that does.

Are .177 pellets still lead? They were the last time I bought them, but that was likely 15-20 years ago.

I got lucky - I found a shooting range in Edmonton that sells lead shot. Had to buy quite a lot, but it's pretty cheap anyway.

                              Cheers,
