Re: Williams & Hussey Molder-Planer good just for planing?

The new bearings arrived this week and I'm hoping to get the machine back together this weekend. If anyone has any recommendations regarding gearbox oil, please let me know. I can order the 600XP 460 from W&H, but it's about $16US plus $30US for shipping. That's pretty expensive stuff and I'm wondering if I could get away with something else for light duty use and/or initial testing of the machine.

An 80 weight gear oils should be more than adequate.

30 bucks! I would've taken a bakers dozen at that price. Looks like an awesome machine. I would think something like 80w gear oil should be fine for the gears. I always like it when i can use a cheaper oil, not afraid to do oil changes often then.

Thanks for the suggestions about gear oil. I sent a couple questions to Williams & Hussey and got some very helpful advice directly from the CEO. Regarding gear oil he said: "You should be okay with 80 weight. If you can get 90 all the better. Nothing less than 80 or gear box will really heat up."
