  • Idea's for a gate

Just wondering if you guys/gals could post of few pics of some gates you've made. I'm looking for some idea's. I think I would like an arch on top, and it would have to be a fairly solid construction, so my dogs won't bark at everyone walking by. it will be inbetween my garage and fence.
    thanx!
Oh and what type of hinges would you suggest, it would be swinging off the 4x4 post.

I made this gate about 2 years ago (or was it 3 years?) . It may give you some starting idea

I used these hinges (A) from Lee Valey:

and this "Gate Latch" (A) also from Lee Valley:

    Hope this helps

You probably won't want this kind of gate, as it is too open. My wife built this one a few years ago. Kind of Mission-style, with 88 mortice and tenon joints. My foot-powered morticer got a good workout on this project.

It's made of white pine, finished with primer and two coats of paint.

If the dogs will bark they may do so regardless of how solid the gate is built. It's one of those ear & nose things.

The hardware on this gate was recycled from the original gate.

              Gate

Here's one I installed last month. Simple design but it is all mortise and tenon and held together with Gorilla Glue. I don't know if it shows in the photo but the customer wanted a locking keyed passage set in the gate. I guess it would keep those crooks too lazy to climb over the fence out. I would make sure that the posts are high enough that you can tie them together across the top otherwise your gate will lean in short time. The hinges are 4 inch butt hinges. Nice gates by some of the other members of the forum.

                  Re: Idea's for a gate

These are the hinges I used, they swing like butter:

And I used this latch so that it latches every time:

No photos of my gate, but it is a lot like Darrell's. I wanted an open gate so you could see through it from the street and so the 90 mph wind tunnel effect between my house and the neighbor's didn't constantly beat against the gate.

Mine is not as fancy as some fellows posted photos but it is a good one for the past 8 years.... SWMBO is pearing out the gate.
