  • Radius Jig

Been working on this for a little while, now I can turn radiuses. Next is to make another mount on the bed to cut larger rads. Click image for larger version

      Re: Radius Jig

The way it is now its limited to a certain diameter mounted to the cross slide. Im going to mount it to the bed.
      Thanks.

                Re: Radius Jig

Your diamater will determine only by the lenght of your bar, the longer the bar, the bigger is the diamater. Also one think you can do, is moving the center point of the pivot inworth, the this way you are going to be able to do inside curve. I woder if your system could be apply to a woodworking lathe, I presume so with a fixe plate on the bed where you can fixe the pivot of the jig. Good work, congratulation.

                  Re: Radius Jig

Yes I can do bigger inside rads than the lathe will swing , but outside rads are limited by my pivot point.
The cutting edge has to be behind the pivot point for outside rads and on my lathe it’s mounted to the cross slide so I’m making another mount which will be on the bed and a C shaped holder so I can do larger rads.

                          Re: Radius Jig

Nice Unit! Lots of clearance for great versatility, with the ability to go "over center" so it will cut inside radius as well.
Built a few different ones over the years. Did one in high school that was basically a modified base for the compound rest, with a dropped toolholder to make up for the thickness change. Worked well, and was nice to be able to use the micrometer adjustment on the compound slide to set the radius, but was kind of "clunky" as it was bi and got in the way a lot.
Did another style specifically for cutting radius blocks for pipe/tubing bending machine. Operating handle runs vertical for a few inches before bending horizontally for ease of use. Used to set the radius like an old school cylinder boring bar: Known machined distance from the centerline to the BACK of the toolholder, set the tool in loosely, then use the Mike to pull it back to proper cut depth.
Also nice to see that there are Others that do "precision woodworking" on a metal lathe...

Thanks, my plan is to add a feed system of sorts.

That is a very simple ball turner Red, should work well, some of these type of jigs are more complicated and precisely adjustable, here are a whole slew of them and yes they do work,

If you reverse the lathes rotation you can do the inside radius, extend the cutter farther over and you do get a larger radius as well
