What am I missing here? Is it something I could have made?

Is there a slot in the bottom of the shaft on the pork chop?

Then there is supposed to be a coil spring with a cross bar at the bottom of it and a knurled knob, the shaft slides through the centre of the spring and the cross bar goes in the slot, I'll see if I can get a picture of mine.

That makes so much more sense. What holds it to the table?

More I look at it I think its different then yours. I read on the vintagemachinery site that they list two versions... the jt-205 and the poitras 4600 but I'm not sure if mine is either of them, maybe an earlier version? My fence only has one rail and I don't see an hole for the screw to hold the bottom portion and then I looked at the table from the bottom and it is not counter bored from below to hold up the bottom part.

Eric's is close to what mine was,no slot, just a hole in the underside of the bed,and another oposing hole in the knob below, that accepts a tang at each end of the springas stated, the knob was supported on a rod that ran up thtough the bore in the bed. Thension is set by winding the knob, then locking with ethe screw
