  • Forge visit, old wadkin

I had the good fortune of visiting a forge to buy some machines. The place had been in the same family for 5 generations. I drove down to put the machine on a pallet and bring one back with me.

    They were melting aluminium

This is why I was their, this is a very early slider. Notice it says 'engineers'

I picked up a really nice sagar disc sander which has a bobbin on the back of the motor.

    Pfakir and WCraig like this.

We call that a foundry rather than a forge over here, do they have hammers as well? That is my kind of place!. When do we get to see the disc/bobbin?

Wow, that is an early one! Maybe pre-Green Lane? No tag shot?

Looks like you've had your own RustFest

More photos please (including the Sagar).

      Cheers, Vann.

My bad, we call it a foundry as well. I just had a brain fart. They only do non ferrous. You can see in the 4th pic a cage with ali ingots and a few big safes to keep the bronze in.

Vann I would say this is from the London street works. They called themselves engineers early on. Theres no tag that I could see. I never really had much time to go over it

WOW! It's a slider too! I see they have a metal cutting blade in it, I hope they didn't bugger it up too much. Please send more pictures when you get it home. Would this be early 1900's era? Another vote for Sagar pics.

Might be a possibility of it being dual arbor. There were old catalogue pics of a dimension saw with a square door that was a dual arbor.

Not a prefect match, but close. Handwheels aren't quite right.

Not the PJ but something similar to what Vann posted.

The angled handwheel, at first glance, looked lower on yours Wallace - but maybe not. The foot is slightly different down that end.

However the second handwheel is missing off yours completely. I'd speculate that either yours never did tilt, or a PO has removed the handle to stop it tilting. I'd guess that the arbour has been extended out the back of the machine, necessitating the removal of the table extension and preventing it from tilting.

Like you, I'm keen to see more detail when it arrives.

                            Is this the Sagar?
