  • Beaver BDS 3900 - drum guard screw

I realized I am missing a screw for my Beaver belt-disc sander. If anyone can provide details (measurements, thread info) for the drum guard screw, it would be much appreciated.

Looks like it’s 1/4-27. I did check, the 28 gauge does not fit correctly.

Perfect! This is super helpful. I likely will have to get the part made, so this is excellent.

        Thank you!

mine just has a regular bolt in it!!
somebody must have retapped it to 1/4-20

its really odd that it was 1/4-27 and not a standard 28 thread

i love the slindle setup on this machine, if you had multiple discs, they would be easy to change

and a question for you guys, how fast is yours running?   manual says 1200 fpm but what sized motor pulley are you using?   and motor speed?

i'll check my motor pulley, but my motor is a 1hp 1725 rpm

            I am having difficulty finding 1/4 - 27.

I will check my motor and pulley and let you know how fast it’s running.

Re: Beaver BDS 3900 - drum guard screw

the manual says 1200 fpm but the manual doesn't state any pulley sizes
i did a quick calculation and the sander should be running at around half the motor speed which seems pretty slow for the disc.
i have no idea what the pulley in the head of the machine is, kind of hard to measure!    a good guess by looking into the housing from the bottom its around 3 1/2
my motor pulley is 6", so im running the sander at 4200 fpm!!

as a comparison, my delta disc sander is direct drive at 1725 whereas the beaver is almost 3000rpm(assuming the upper pulley is 3 1/2

I have a 12''disc 6'' belt King industrial that is direct drive 3600 rpm. Good machine.

well now i dont feel that im way off with the speed of mine!!
part of the issue back in the 40's im sure was the sanding belts and disks.
old belts were probably harder to keep tracking properly and disk adhesive has probably improved immensely
i use hook and loop disk on both sanders and ive never had one come loose.
i rarely have issues with belts tracking poorly, usually thats a sign that a new belt is needed!
and another note, both my sanders have reverse, makes no difference with the belt section but it does open more sanding options on the disks and the disks last longer.   and yes, the beaver beltsanders runs just fine in reverse although i use the belt section in reverse
