  • Aldinger jointer information!

    Hi,

I have an Aldinger 16" jointer that I would like more information on but I do find very little on the web. It is also the only one I have ever seen on this side of the Altantic...

anyone can say how old it is? any websites where I can have more info even if it's in German?
    Thanks

That baby router table on the floor behind the beast looks soooooo out of place. What a monster. Sorry, can't help with the information request.

I'd give a try at the Stuttgart archives , maybe they'd come up with something of interest.

What do you need a manual for?

2 knifes. very smooth finish even with just 2 knives and no vibration. Not exactly looking for a manual but I would really like to know how old it is. I have seen 2 Aldinger planers, 1 in QC and the other one on exfactory.com.....real huge beasts at 30 and 36" wide!!

There is a serial # stamped on top of the infeed table and still very clear....can't remember what it is without putting by boots on to go check.

                      Mario let see the tag.

parallelogram tables came in about the 1950 out of Italiaty and then Germany. first with 2 than 3 than 4 knife heads, White (an English maker) were building planers with parallelogram table in 1947. During the 1960s the Italians, especially SCM featured 3 knife, and later 4 knife, cutter blocks, had longer tables with parallelogram adjusters. Serrated table lip inserts at the head opening to reduce noise was around by the 1970s.

Are the knife skewed in the cutter block?

my guess is your machine is from the 60s because it is 2 knife with out Serrated table lips.

there are the German fourms too.

2 knifes, not serrated lips.... I'll get back tomorrow with a picture of the serial number....

                        thanks for the link!!!!

                          Re: Aldinger jointer information!

The 2 knife head is fine for a jointer. The 2 reason being that the jointer is not a finishing machine, and no mater how good someone is with setting knifes up in a 3 or 4 knife head you really only get a true 3 or 4 knife cut if the knifes have been stoned off the rear table

                          http://forums.finewoodworking.com/fi...jointer-blades

Contrary to the belief that more knifes cut better, a two knife head will cut just as well with a slower feed rate, Many times the 2 knife heads are larger in diameter(5" to 6") and give rim speed to the knife that will cut figure much better. the old 2 knife heads have cutting geometry of the old square heads that in general have a steeper rake angle to the knife. This is my preferred head for larger figured timber.

The down side is that the blades ware faster but you have a large 16" jointer and as
much blade ware as a 4 knife 8" head.

Hi, could you calculate the head's rpm for me? I am changing a similar 2 knife 5''dia. 16'' jointer to single phase. The original motor does not have the plate showing rpm. My machine is from the eighties and has non serrated inserts.
