I managed to get it with difficulty. The gib strip is assembled with pressure.

Hi ErikM, both keys are different. The key of the motor shaft is longer and slimmer.
The head shaft key is more tighten.

Re: Restoring my lathe Wadkin RS 8

Yves, the shaft is looking good, I assume that the other bearing remains in the casting? Will you be removing that one also or just cleaning it in place?

Thanks for the measurement, I think I have found a suitable C Spanner and I look forward to a similar process in Jan. I think my bearings are fine but the grease is old and I want to relubricate everything with SKF grease before I put the lathe to much use. I am going to order a Oneway chuck with the Wadkin thread rather than use the existing chuck which is better suited to metal.

I look forward to the pics of the reassembly.

        Hi ErckM,
I'll take the time to see how I'm going to remove the bearing head without damaging it. As for the rest I'll make pictures.

I ended up leaving the cage of the bearing outer side of the head.
I started to see if I could hit on the cage of the bearing from the inside of the head

I decided to try to remove the bearing located on the other side of the head.
I started with the hit gently, to my surprise it came out easily.

Re: Restoring my lathe Wadkin RS 8

Those are angular contact Precision bearings and worth about $350 each . They're made by Hoffman, Hoffman made bearings for the Rolls-Royce jet engines they were the most Precision bearing maker in England . Angular contact bearings are used in pairs this is how they load the bearings. One pushes against the other so that shafts can take massive thrust Loads when the tail stock is driven up against it yet have absolutely no end play in the shaft when turning on the chuck this is good on the Lathe. the spanner nut You made the wrench for loads these bearings by how tight you make the nut pull them together, You can see that only the outer race is held in the cast and the shaft pulls the inner race together as well as the nut on that side.

                Jack, Yves,

So those two inner bearings are not roller bearings like the outboard bearings, and none of the three bearings are self-aligning.

Just how would one go about re-installing them to get the alignment and spacing correct?

At $350 a bearing I will want to avoid anything that might require a bearing replacement with mine as I am certain that the bearings are identical to Yves.

I think a lot of people think you change bearings because generally bearings are inexpensive and as mechanics we are told to change bearings. And then you see wadkin and the way they build with lifespan measured in decades and all of the of the spindles used on these machines is second to none. The problem sometimes is you can't get as good of bearings as you used to because they're no longer made to the same quality

Re: Restoring my lathe Wadkin RS 8

I hear you Jack, I am quite sure my bearings are likely OK, as I am aware of the work history of my lathe since 1955 and it was rarely used, being in a Govt workshop. I suspect that the grease may have broken down over time and so I would like to just give everything a good cleaning before re-lubricating with that SKF LGMT2 grease that you recommended.

If I can pull the spindle without disturbing the two anglular contact bearings that may be all that is required to give all bearings a good cleaning without disturbing the alignment.

I think I have one bearing is not good. The price is for one or for the pair. If I change, I use Hoffman or SKF? And where I buy it?

Hoffman are no longer they were bought up by an amalgamation of ransom and marble polard and Hoffman to form RHP

                        http://engineersmate.com/news/1/2012...A-World-Leader

You would have to buy two As their sets and because I can't find the information as to the preload it's hard to say if an exact replacement could be made. I was talking to a gentleman a few years ago actually had a Wadkin RS rebuilt and shipped from England and he had constant trouble with those bearings running hot and this was after a short period of time. He did claim to resolve the problem by adjusting the preload but I was unsure as to his technique and thought it was a little dodgy. The best thing would be to find old stock Hoffman bearings

I give you the information of those bearings. The information is the same on both bearing except some chipping.
On the bearing is writing "ENGLAND TH B THRUST HOFFMAN 145ACD. On the fisrt one is chiseling "133 Set N (he have a little o at the right corner of the N) C67".
The second is chiseling "134 Set N (he have a little o at the right corner of the N) C67".
