  • Nitrocelullose lacquer over water borne lacquer

Any issue with spraying nitro cellulose lacquer over fully cured water borne lacquer. Will it adhere or de-laminate? Surface sanded before spraying of course.

    thx

I wouldn't do it. Too many potential problems with the solvents reacting with the waterbased.
If you absolutely have to go that way, then maybe spray a couple thin coats of shellac to act as a barrier coat, but alcohol may attack the waterbased.
Just curiously, why do you want to do this?

Paul is correct this is a risky. IF they do adhere you run the risk of them expanding and contracting over and time at difference rates and failing.

If you are going to do this I would remove as much as you can whether by sanding or stripper. Then do a barrier coat of vinyl sealer or Shellac.

If it needs to be recoated why not recoat in WB. Lots of good WB products in the market today.

Agree with the above I wouldn’t recommend it.

        Why nitro?

If it's wearability you're after, Dan (can't think of any other reason why you'd want to lay that on), I guess you should have used waterborne conversion varnish instead of the lacquer. But please don't attempt to apply it on top of your existing lacquer, as the two are so different in so many ways that the finish will most likely fair at some future time..

I did a bit of searching and came up with this thread on Woodweb. Hope this gives you a few ideas as to how best to proceed.
