I just installed a set of white oak railings on our deck and associated stairway. Because this will be subjected to our notoriously diverse Canadian climate, I am scratching my head as to what - if anything - to use to protect it. Please keep in mind that I used quite green lumber (it was milled this spring and had only been air drying for only 6 months), so that will have to be factored into what may best work.

As an aside, here's a few photos of work leading up to the end result:

Curved stairway rails temporarily clamped into position. Note the "temporary" 2X6 rails which I installed nearly 5 years ago when I built the deck and stairs. (How does one spell "procrastination"?)

Thompsons. We used it on our new PT deck. Impressed by its ability to keep water out of the wood. I sanded the red paint off oak slats on our park bench and brushed on Thompsons clear. We will probably do another coat next spring.

Geez Brian we hated that stuff. By the end of the summer it was peeling, and we followed the instructions to a T, including the cleaning beforehand. They sent us replacement, and it fared no better.

My experience was the same as yours. I used it on a picnic table that was constructed from DRY spruce construction lumber. It went sort of grey-yellow and started peeling/flaking before the first season ended.
That said, this was twenty years ago, we haven't used it since and it may be better now.

I'm beginning to think that I'd best leave it unfinished and let mother nature take its time to bring out its lovely grey patina.

As it’s outside if any finish is applied Perhaps a dye type that does not seal it might be a consideration.

time will tell if it won't stand up on our applications, will be on the lookout for problems

I haven"t tried this particular product but I have used exterior penetrating oil before with good results.
Check out the reviews on Amazon.ca CabotStain 04-3400 Australian Timber Oil Penetrating formula.

Thanks the the suggestions, everyone. Another forumite suggested Cetol, so I guess I have a bit of research to do, don't I? Shouldn't be too much of a problem because I won't because the weather here in Ontario has pretty well closed us down for any outdoor project finishing.

                    Again, thanks for the ideas.

I would also recommend a Cetol product from Sikkens. Has stood up well here in Alberta.

Thanks, Glenn. That makes 2 of you for Cetol. I'll be checking into it.
