  • Make red oak look like white oak

My wife and her 'designer' want unstained 1/4 sawn white oak floors. I've got a line on some free unfinished 1/4 sawn red oak floors. Does anyone have any ideas on how I might take out that reddish/pink hue and make them look like unstained white oak?

This might me a good start to your reading - but they caution against bleaching flooring:

I've read that article on bleaching, and the worriy of weakening the wood fibres doesn't worry me. I would prefer a little wear and tear to give the floors an older look anyway. My only issue with bleaching is trying to do 600 s.f. at the same time.

      Thanks for the link

Lainate some white oak on top of it......

You might be able to change to colour of the wood slightly, but you can't make red oak look like white oak with a finish any more than you could make me look like Mag Ruffman with a coat of make-up. The underlying structure of the wood is completely different and that is what makes it look like white oak.

        Cheers
