  • Staining maple to look like dark walnut?

    Good evening,

I am trying to stain wood pistol grips that are made out of maple to look like a dark walnut.
What products are out there that will work without blotching?
Do I go with a gel stain over an oil stain?
I would prefer the finish to be flat (semi gloss would be as shiny as I would want to go but prefer flat)

Wouldn't it be easier and cheeper to use walnut in the first place?

Dye stain, seal with shellac, gel stain, topcoat with wipe on satin poly.
