    I thought about that myself after I had made the post. I'm guessing that mortises can be made easily enough with Forstner bits and a jig to hold the pieces at 45 degrees. I'd then cut the notch undersize, fit the mortises in the tenon as far as it will go, mark lines on the shelf parallel to each face on the post, and then make the final cut on the shelf.

    In retrospect, probably too much work.

      After a bit more thought, I'd do an exposed mortise on the underside of the shelf. By doing it this way, I can use a router on both the shelf and the post.
