  • Edgebanding Router Bit - Is it worth it?

Hello, I recently came across a video that showed a Amana Tools Edgebanding Router bit. I have a project coming up that requires some edgebanding, and I wanted to do hardwood/glue. But this video shows a type of Vgroove router bit saying it's a stronger joint than just glue alone.
    1. Has anyone used these bits? Thoughts?
    2. Would a regular straight tongue and groove or a wedge tongue and groove bit do the same thing?
    3. Would just glued hardwood be strong enough, or it is prone to break off at the joint?

Hi, I just glue the edging on.

I did make a groove/spline joint once however it wasn't worth the effort........Rod

I like (and use) the "Burgess edge" bit that you can get from Lee Valley. Same idea, but it's adjustable and curved, rather than V shaped.

It's a bit finicky to get set up, but once that was done I found the process reasonably quick.

I cut my ply to the finished size, then do the Burgess edge, then run it through the table saw to cut it off flush. The result is that you don't see an edgeband joint, it just looks (almost) like solid wood. I charge a lot extra for it, but when clients see the difference between regular edge banding and an invisible joint Burgess edge, they are usually happy to pay.

Let's see if I have a pic of a piece....

Ok, this is all I have on me, it's a little hard to tell under 2 coats of ebony stain, but while the door strips are solid maple, all the rest of this is maple ply with Burgess edges.

I have used an edging bit from LV for many years. It only gets used on projects that are worth it. It will do many types of jobs if you have the imagination. It will take a few yrs. to pay for itself but if you think you will use it it is worth the outlay. Here is one sample of thinking outside the box.

Plus three for the Lee valley bit.I like that I can glue a large enough piece of solid wood to a veneered plywood that I can router a profile in it

I am with Rod. The others are good but I have never had one fail.

Yuan that's them, though I notice the LV website no longer shows a lot of the great pics that used to be there for that bit. Take a look at the company website to really see what it can do:
