"Being so impressed with the beauty of nature, I never cease to be amazed at how the
'touch of the human hand' can transform it into another kind of beauty that is so uniquely human."
John Snow, Outdoorsman and Retired Teacher
Was it quite hard?
Kinda looks like hop hornbeam to me (aka ironwood) but that's quite thick if it is.
Your wood's bark doesn't appear to be as "shaggy" as the logs I've seen, but there are definite similarities.
Not Apple or Walnut, bark is off for Apple, the dark hearth is off for Walnut, it looks more purple than the brown in the picture, the bark looks right for Elm and so does the wood and dark color in there.
The hickories I have turned have a different bark and wood, but I only turned a couple species, shellbark and shagbark are not like that, and neither is Bitternut/Pignut Hickory, I have turned it, and have pictures of it.
