                Thanks Redlee!

I made a few carving in stone too. If you want, here's a post where I show some of my stone carvings!

It's actually not, but neither is making a statue that represents an ethnic group. I'm usually not very politically correct myself, but I am sensitive to these kinds of representations which always bring up the question of stereotype. The image of an Aboriginal (or Native American... although some take offense to that term) with a hook nose, long hair, and stoic face is the image that haunted Native Americans for over a century. A few leaders had their pictures taken way back when, and then Hollywood and the media would not hire Native Americans unless they resembled these photos. I read the story of one man who was not Native American but who had the hook nose and let his hair grow, and he got a lot of roles as "Indian" chiefs in the fifties. In any case, I don't know Jackmaya that well, but I do know that he is a super nice guy with a huge heart, and he would never intentionally give offense to anyone. But this kind of representation, I believe, is inviting a debate if you're going to make it public. Cultural appropriation is also something that i usually think is misguided, but this sculpture could certainly be the basis of an interesting discussion on it. No Native Americans look like this anymore, and very few actually did in the first place, and IMO it perpetuates a stereotype.

                      Re: Native american indian

Huuum..! Didn't want to start a debate with the title, I just taught it was the right way to say it correctly in english...! Would it be native american only? If so, I'll simply edit if you confirm.

Thanks Frank for the nice words, it always feels good to read the positive perception someone has of you developed on the writings you do on different forums! Forums can sometimes be tricky with the perception of what you write...!

For the sculpture in itself, I'm aware that they don't look like this anymore Frank. I have no intention other then just carve an image, probably a stereotype, but an image without any political thought, cultural appropriation or else... just an idea of a woodcarving like I would have carved anything else. Simply a subject that allows me to try to develop my technique!

Like you said, definitely not trying to offense!

                      Always happy to read you!

Very talented and totally agree that politically correctness has gone overboard. Thanks for posting.
