  • New Member introduction and my latest project

    Good day everyone -
First post here - perhaps an introduction is in order. My name is James from Saskatoon and I've been woodworking for 5 years or so. I am a research coordinator at the University of Saskatchewan and woodwork to keep my hands busy and make a few dimes on the side. Most of my projects are on the smaller side, boxes, lamps, smaller furniture projects.

I thought I'd show my latest project. It is a kumiko coffee table. My original inspiration was from Jon Billings in the pages of Fine Woodworking but wanted to take it in a slightly different direction. Please excuse the mess that is my shop.

I started with some 8/4 ash and rough cut the legs on the table saw.

Mortises were cut by hand and tapers were added to the legs with my low angle jack:

Once the legs were done aprons were cut, tenons sized and then glued together in two stages. First I glued up the short ends and then glued up the long ends. Photo is of the second glue up:

With the base done it was time to pay attention to the top. I went back to the same 8/4 piece of ash that the legs came from and cut two planks. They received rabbets on the inside faces for the kumiko insert and then were attached underneath using cleats attached with screws.

Finally it was time to tackle the kumiko. Following Mike Pekovich's instructions in Fine Woodworking I built the jigs and instead of trying to thickness my own stock down to 1/8" I just bought balsa strips from the local hobby shop. I've since switched to the spruce stock they have as it is a little sturdier.

Kumiko panel built, it was time to put it altogether:

It started with open ends but QC (my wife) didn't care for that look and I agreed with her. Fixing that took some creative solutions. Using an off-cut of the top I cut a little block that would fit between the two planks. These were notched for the kumiko panel and then glued. A little finessing with the router plane and voila.

A pane of glass over the kumiko offers protection. Finish was a seal coat of shellac followed by 3 coats of Arm-R-Seal on the base and 5 coats on the top. Waxed and buffed and it was done.

Welcome to the forum James. It's always a pleasure to see someone's work and especially with build photos. The photos you tried to insert in the narrative are not showing except for the ones starting with the kumiko panel. Very fine work from what I can see.

Thanks for letting me know Dennis. They were showing up on my computer but when I switched browsers (not logged in) they disappeared. Should be fixed now.

Very nice work James. Any words of wisdom about lessons learned from making kumiko?

Very nice, it must feel good taking on such a challenge and succeeding, it will be good to see where you go from this masterpiece.
What did you use to glue it together with?
