  • A new handle for Jacques cleaver!

A while ago, Jacques Leclerc send me an old Henry Boker cleaver that needed a new handle. The tang is not the same thickness from the top to the bottom so I decided to make a hidden tang handle.

I first carved the shape of the tang on each pieces of black walnut to fit the progressive thickness of it and have a perfect fit and then roughly cut the shape of the handle. I still have to drill the holes for the rivets, glue everything with epoxy and then do the final shaping of the handle.

Here are my first steps! Hope he's gonna like it!

Re: A new handle for Jacques cleaver!

I advanced a little, roughing the shape of the handle after the kids went to bed. It'll be nice once I finish the shaping and sanding! For the design of the handle, I still wanted to follow as much as possible the original one just a little bigger and I arranged for the top of the back of the handle to make a recall with the top of the back of the head of the cleaver. I like the look that it makes!

Also, as the hidden tang is mounted between two pieces rather than digging the center of one piece, I was very careful to get as much as possible that the grain of the wood continues all round as if it was made out of one piece. It's good enough for my eye ...! ;) I'll finish it quietly tomorrow night! By that time...
