  • Where do you buy hinges?

I am currently making a couple of keepsake boxes for my twin grandsons who are six. While I am trying to make them both strong and attractive I am under no illusion that they won't be treated somewhat roughly. I am reluctant to use Brusso hinges because of the cost as the boxes may not survive with the lids intact too many years. I would however like something better than the packaged hinges available at Rona, Home Hardware, etc. Is there something in between in quality and reasonable quantity? I'm not having any success in sourcing anything.

Amazon might have a wide variety of hinges.... If you know it will not last maybe buy a Brass piano hinge or something like that. You can hand polish it and there's many things you can do in order to improve the look of cheaper hinges from a hardware store.

This guy has a great video on dressing hardware store hinges so they look nice.

If you do go the piano hinge route. Home Hardware stocks Larsen&Shaw brand piano hinges, I've used quite a few of them, nice quality and most importantly, Made in Canada.

Rockler has less expensive hinges. I only use Brusso though and buy direct from their website. Buy the best and never be disappointed!

Most of my hinges come from Horton Brasses. They are good quality, and the people are nice to deal with.
