  • OT - best way to clear a bathroom sink

Used my consumer-grade sink auger to clear the clogged bathroom sink. Worked perfectly. Two attempts and it got everything.

Went back in a third time thinking I'd get every last bit.

    Yup. You guessed it.

I must have jammed SOMETHING waaaay down the pipe because now the water does not move at all.

Reluctant to call the plumber just yet.

And don't want to use Draino.

Thinking of using boiling water and Dawn dish soap.

Does anybody have any other ideas? This blockage is further than 16 inches away from the sink.

Have you removed the trap under the sink and snaked from there? I'd try that first, but make sure you line the bottom the cabinet well with layers of rags or old towels to catch the water that may come out when you disconnect.

Thanks John. I suspect I'll try the sink plunger or just break down and call the plumber!

Why not just use the auger until it is clear? Plumbers usually take the auger all the way to the sewer connection.

              Auger is 16 inches long.

I've heard Draino eats the pipes. So I'm reluctant to use it.

In the words of Borat: Great success!

Nearly half a litre of Dawn. About six litres of boiled water. Four separate shots. My sink now drains.

It either cleared it all or it just pushed things further down. But the sink now works (until next time, that is)

                Thanks, everybody.

I have used baking soda and vinegar from time to time.

Wet and dry shop vac can work if the blockage is before the vent.
