  • 350 bdft of qswo ph 4 steam bending

well the table is complete, and i really have to thank everybody who offered advice and encouragement
staining and finishing is well under way
so now its steam bending some parts for the chairs
the chairs require 2 parts to be bent, a bttom rail about 56 inches long bent to form a u shaped piece with a 19 inch diameter and 8 inch extensions beyond the bend
i'll try to post a plan later, its a pdf file about 6 pages long
here's a couple of pics of the steam setup and the bending jig, success is soso, advice is welcome
the steaming setup works really well it seems, well over 190 F and probably really close to 212 F, im using an oven thermometer in the top end but it only reads to 190
the lee valley bending set up is really cool, takes some of th stress out of the process. the first piece next to the jig was an early experiment now just used as an extension

im really new to steam bending, well actually a virgin, so advice would be greatly welcomed

the pieces i am making are 1 1/2 inch square made from two pieces laminated together
after the first piece is bent and cooled, it will go back into the form so that the second layer can be bent around it, then glued together
when can they be glued together? during the bending process?(one piece will be hot and wet) or wait until its cold?

Why not bend them both together? Glue when dried.

my steam chamber which is a piece of three inch abs will only hold one piece at a time and the bending process itself is hard enough with one piece!!
i have six of these U shaped pieces to make, so 12 bends

When I did that I bent all th bpieces and then glued them after they were dry. You have to do the bending pretty fast while the wood is still hot.
