  • A few recent projects

Just to prove that I do in fact still spend a bit of time in the shop, these are a few things I've been working on recently. The first is a recipe box I made for my MIL for Christmas:
    P1020177small.jpgP1020179small.jpg
Curly maple, cherry aniline dye and shellac. I actually made a second one, virtually the same for my SIL for Christmas as well.

This next one is a coffee grider from LV. I just finished it up today:
    P1020237small.jpg
Cherry, again finished with amber shellac.

And this last one is a 'couch table':
    P1020238small.jpgP1020239small.jpg
I'm in the process of making another one, that will nest inside this one when not in use. The splines were originally going to be dovetailed, but I muffed one of the cuts so I just slotted them instead. Wood is maple and padauk, finished with waterbased poly. I'm not entirely happy with the colours of this one, but it's sure nice to have a place to set a cup of coffee.

    Thanks for looking,
    Kerry

Nice ones Kerry. I like the idea of having the coffee cup very close to hand while you are laying on the couch

All three are very nice but I like the couch table the best. Don't know where you are getting the wood but is shure stand out as special stuff.

The joinery in all three is outstanding as usual.

        Congratulations!!

          Very nice Kerry,

I really like the tiger stripe. Really beautiful wood well presented.

You've been busy! That couch table is an interesting idea and nicely executed. I like the colour contrast with the maple.

I particularly like the couch table.
Just curious, did you make it with 90-degree angles or slightly less to increase stability?
                How much does it deflect?
                How stable is it?

                Beautiful craftsmanship, imagination and execution!!

Yes, the angles are 90, although it closed up just slightly. Not the result of deflection from weight, it was the result of not taking enough care when clamping. It's only out by a very small amount though and I have to measure it to detect it. Strength/stability wise - I haven't set anything super heavy on it to see how much it deflects, but maybe I will just to see. I don't think I'd sit on it or anything, but I can't think of any reasonably likely object to be placed on it that I think would cause any grief. I'll try and remember to run a little test tonight.

                  Thanks again everyone.

                  Cheers,
                  Kerry

My grandma has a coffee grinder she brought over after the War in 1952 I think, that looks exactly like the one you built here.

The table looks beautiful and so useful! I spill so much I tend to use my chest as the table......lol

Will the test include a truck balancing on top of it like the "S design table" test?

LOL, no. I don't think so.

I did put a 28lb concrete statue on it though, about 5" from the unsupported edge and it deflected 3/16". Since I rarely ever have more than 28lbs of coffee at a time, I think we're safe .
