  • False economy ?

    Or an hour of fun

Quite awhile ago I purchased a set of nut drivers with handle.

You know the kind, maybe $12 on sale....

The plastic container needed duct taping within a month

Took it to a wood conference along with some other tools and the handle disappeared.

The drivers were handy enough occasionally so I kept them and used them in my hand drill and/or even with vise grips.

Always meant to get around to making a replacement handle and it finally happened

I had some macassar ebony "left over" from a project, the blank was too small to introduce coves or beads for a better grip but I figured it would make a good prototype...

This is figuring out how to proceed, the brass ferrule is from Lee Valley.

I then drilled a shallow hole with a brad point bit in the center of the blank to guide a normal bit of the correct size on the lathe.

Next was to cut a slot for the "wings" of the drivers on the band saw.

Then I cut a nub on the end of a piece of 3/4" dowel to support the blank while turning the handle.

I love it! I had not seen those ferrules at LV before your post. I use copper pipe couplers for the handles of my turning gouges. You've given me yet another excuse to wander by LV.

        Hmm, you're still only out-of-pocket about $15.

Looks great, if they perform, then I think you're still ahead!
        It's not about you.

Never even thought of using copper pipe, I have lots of bits and pieces of that

A little off topic but when I saw picture #1 the first thought that came to mind was - 'now there's a bench with character'

I respect a bench that is well used and well loved!...mine looks a lot worse...LOL
When someone tells you it can't be done, it's a reflection of their limitations, not yours.

I use copper pipe CAPS and drill a hole in the center. Looks even more finished, IMHO.
