  • So who's making a hand tool?

I thought I would give it a try, I will be using mostly hand tools as most of my stationary equipment is apart for moving, which I hope is soon.

I'd like to make a round bottom plane (to make shallow coves), but the timing's not very good. Here in Ontario we only get just so many nice summer days... and I want to keep them for doing things outside!

Didn't you hear Marty? Great news......we spent all our nice summer days in Ontario in July, and August is going to be awesome for spending time in the shop!

What are you planning on making Jerome?

I will be detailing the simple scratch stock on our current cover. Not the one in the foreground, but the one in the background. I made it about one thousand times more difficult than I needed to, but I wanted it to look interesting, in addition to being a functioning tool. I'll start the thread over the next few days.

Anyone else going to join us? Hopefully we get a good turnout, and we can do this sort of thing many more times.

I started a kerfing plane last year. It is on hold right now for the shop build, but I will get back to it.

Looking forward to it Jim. Did you happen to see Konrad Sauer's article on shaping his plane handles in our current issue? You're obviously pretty comfortable in shaping handles, but you mind find a few more tips there.

                  Lots of options, eh!

Glad to hear you're onboard Mark.

No, I didn't. This is the first handle I have made and I just kind of copied the one on my most comfortable hand saw. I made it wide to try to avoid small pressure points on the palm/heel of my hand.

A panel gauge is on my list but I'm just too busy with upcoming move to get any shop time. That and all my tools are packed away in boxes....

Re: So who's making a hand tool?

I would like to make a few things, depending how they come out they maybe gifts, or more ornamental items.
Plum bob (inspired by schor's thread) possible gift
                        brass & soft faced mallet
                        wood mallet for chisels

which ones, and how many get completed in time depends a lot on weather (like Marty we take advantage of the nice days whenever we can) and how much time I can get into the garage and spin up the lathe.
                        [insert something witty here]

Jerome's mallet thread got moved to a never never land. Can't find it now, but it did look pretty good.

                            Hi Mike,

Since it was a build thread for the event I moved it to the "Building Together: Hand Tools" subforum, in the general Woodworking area. The permanent redirect is actually just under this thread right now. If you click on it you will go there.
