  • Square ducting?

I will be picking up a 5hp cyclone shortly, I know it is a bit large for my needs but the price was right.
I have an 8 X 14 old heat run in my shop that is unused and goes right to where I will be placing the DC can this be used to save on ducting or is it a bad idea?

I'm pretty sure the corners are going to slow the flow down, and create areas for chips to collect, but it may not slow things down enough for it to matter. Hard to resist using what's already there! I'm sure someone here will be able to give you some good advice.

        Re: Square ducting?

Hi, that's a pretty large duct for a cyclone that small.

If you have 2,000CFM (which you won't) that would only be 2,500 Ft/minute which is low.

You would be better off putting in the correct size ducting.

What airflow have you calculated for your system?

        regards, Rod.

8x14 cross section is equivilant to a tad more than 12"ø so yes much too large

              Re: Square ducting?

The chip speed won't be high enough so they will settle out and fill the duct. So would look for spiral steel ducting.
